Fangs, shells, small bones, claws, or feathers can be used for protection, luck, for shamanic practice, or in order to draw from the qualities and abilities of the spirit animals that inhabit them. For example, a crow feather or claw may help balance your life and enforce your quest for knowledge of the greater mysteries, or fox fangs or bones may help you attain the wits you’d need in order to sail through a difficult situation. Likewise, they can be used during shamanic work for protection and guidance when traveling between worlds.
Coyote Canine Teeth
Coyotes, just as the bat, have a legion of use in folk magic. A symbol for the birth of the world in First Nation Tribes, a hard lesson learned, playfulness, trickery, intelligence, you name it--the Coyote has an association in some form of lore. Though not categorically associated with witches, canines in general are revered in witchy ways (see Black Dog, or the Hound).
Coyotes like wolves often live and hunt cooperatively in extended family groups. This gives the coyote significance in divination, ritual and spellcasting involving family and community relationships. The eerie songs of the Coyote at night may seem as a ruckus to some, but to the true ears of a witch, one knows its the songs of those who travel between worlds. Their ability to adapt and figure out new situations makes them a potential magical resource for problem solving. Coyotes cannot or will not be controlled, which is a factor to consider when calling on their magic, and can be seen as a introspective look at the witch performing the call. The much-maligned coyote is a survivor and cannot be gotten rid of, despite the attempts of many throughout the centuries. Under the pressure of annihilation, their numbers have thrived and come back even stronger than before. Learning to gracefully accept a loss – any loss – is a lesson that eludes many people, but the coyote keeps trying.
A common theme is of Coyote benefiting the human community by organizing the theft of fire, or of the sun, from the supernatural beings who have been keeping it for themselves; in these myths he is portrayed as a benefactor of the people. It is also said that the coyote is the first creature to tell a lie: in one lore the coyote tried to create new animals and would laugh at himself because it didn't work. Another spirit said that to successfully create a creature, the coyote should stop laughing, to which the coyote denied ever laughing in the first place.
Coyote remains are used interchangeably with wolf or Hound remains and are used to represent Hekate and her shadow world.
